Dear Friends,
On this weekend parishes throughout the United States are celebrating World Marriage Day. The idea of celebrating marriage began in Baton Rouge, Louisiana in 1981. Adopted by Worldwide Marriage Encounter in 1983, World Marriage Day was designated to be celebrated each year on the second Sunday in February. In 1993, Pope John Paul II imparted his Apostolic Blessing on WMD. This day gives us the opportunity to honor husband and wife as head of the family, the basic unit of society. It salutes the beauty of their faithfulness, sacrifice and joy in daily, married life.
This Tuesday I will be going to the “southern missions”. While down there I will visit my mother and brother who live in Winter Haven, Florida. Please keep my Mom in your prayers as she is experiencing some physical problems and recently had heart surgery. Incidentally, for many years Winter Haven was the spring training home for the Boston Red Sox. They now train in Fort Myers and are opening camp on Wednesday. I will return to Burlington on February 23rd. Have a good week.
   -Father Bill

The Mass Explained: Liturgy of the Word

Throughout the Mass, our attention is directed in one of two places: the ambo where the Liturgy of the Word is proclaimed, and later, the altar for the Liturgy of the Eucharist when the sacrifice of Calvary is made present under the appearances of bread and wine. These two locations highlight the two 'parts' of the Mass. The Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of the Eucharist are entirely important and linked together, but they are not equal. The Liturgy of the Word serves as our preparation for the Eucharist. Just as the Old Testament prepared the Jewish people for the coming of the Messiah, the Scriptures still prepare us for Jesus' presence at every Mass.
The Liturgy of the Word includes readings only from the Bible (Sacred Scripture), a homily, a Profession of Faith (also called the Creed) and the General Intercessions. In the Liturgy of the Word, we listen to the readings from Scripture that tell us of the wonders God has done since the beginning of time. The Book of Hebrews tells us that “The Word of God is something alive and active; it cuts like a double-edged sword.” Because Scripture is alive, we need not worry that we may have heard it before. As we grow spiritually, it will always speak to us differently. All readings are ultimately oriented toward Christ so they should never become tedious.
The first reading is always from the Old Testament (except for the Easter Season). Anywhere in the Gospels Jesus refers to “Scripture,” He means the Old Testament. The first reading is always chosen because it somehow relates to the Gospel of the day. By listening carefully, you can devise your own homily in your mind - drawing the two together. During the 50 days of the Easter season, the First Reading is taken from the Acts of the Apostles in the New Testament. This allows us to focus on the theology of the early Church after the Resurrection. At the end of the reading, the lector will tell us that what we have been listening to is “The Word of the Lord.” Our response is taken from the Bible itself, when we say “Thanks be to God!” St. Paul used this phrase repeatedly when he recalled God's blessings. Hearing Scripture is one of the blessings we should always be thankful for!
The Psalm Response is taken from the Old Testament book of Psalms. They are the very prayers that Jesus prayed daily as a faithful Jew in the Temple and Synagogue. In fact, He most likely had them memorized, since scrolls were scarce. The early Church saw the Psalms as revealing the inner life of Jesus because they capture every emotion from sorrow to rejoicing.
The second reading, unlike the first, is always taken from the New Testament. They always deal with the coming of Jesus and the establishment of a new Covenant between God and His people through His ministry and ultimately His passion, death and resurrection. These readings are not matched to the Gospel, but are called 'lectio continua,' (meaning 'continuous reading') from one week to the next. These letters were originally written to local churches or particular people, yet because we are members of the mystical Body of Christ, they are written to us as well. They have something to say to us in our present day.
