We are also in need of a substitutes for people who are on vacation during February & March. We are always in need of substitutes for the hours of 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. Please call Marge at 658-0228 or Winnie at 862-9598 if you are able to help out for this short period or to commit to spend an hour with our Lord.

Dear Friends,
As I mentioned in last weekend's bulletin, I am in Florida visiting my mother and my brother and his family. I plan on returning this coming Thursday. It is a good time for me to spend some time with my Mom. She recently moved to Winter Haven after living more than twenty-five years in Bradenton.
I was a bit disappointed in the number of nominations for parish council that we received, and I am hoping that by extending the deadline we might receive a few more so that we can have a viable election sometime in March. We are hoping to elect six new members to the council and were looking to have at least twelve candidates. Please give some serious thought to this matter and send the names of your nominees on to the parish office. We will contact those who are being nominated to be sure that they are willing to run for election. Thanks, and have a good week. I look forward to seeing you soon.
Father Bill

COMING SOON! Free CD's! Learn about a variety of vital topics from well-known Catholic speakers such as Fr. Benedict Groeschel, Dr. Scott Hahn (former Protestant minister), Archbishop Fulton Sheen, and many others. This is a practical and effective way to deepen your faith and reach out to help evangelize family members, friends, and co-workers by passing along the CD's after you have listened to them. For those who are able, a suggested donation of $2.50 per CD would be greatly appreciated to help continue this program and keep a supply of new titles coming in. Be sure to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity!

LENT IS COMING! Lent begins with Ash Wednesday on March 1st. This year the Burlington Parishes will join together in sponsoring a Lenten Retreat to be held at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception on March 6-8. Father Richard Lavalley, pastor of St. Francis Xavier Parish in Winooski, will be the retreat master. Please be sure to save these dates so that you will be able to attend and participate in this retreat, a time for spiritual renewal and growth. Father Dan White will be offering a series on spirituality on four consecutive Wednesday evenings beginning March 15th. Magnificat Lenten booklets will be available for your daily personal prayer and reflection during Lent and will be distributed next weekend.

NOMINATIONS FOR PARISH COUNCIL ELECTIONS: Because of a lack of response, the deadline to submit nominations has been extended to Monday, February 27th. If you have not done so, please deliver your nominations in person or forward to the rectory by fax or e-mail so that we may receive them in preparation for the election. Candidates for election will be asked to submit a recent photo of themselves and a brief biographical sketch.

IRS CONTRIBUTIONS AND USING ENVELOPES
: The only way we can record your weekly contributions to the church is through our numbered contribution envelope system. With the start of a new year, on which the tax system is based, we urge everyone to use envelopes, starting as soon as possible. Regular use of envelopes helps families/individuals better plan their yearly support, plus it helps the parish when we are working out our budget. An added bonus is that when tax time comes, a written statement of your donations can be sent to you. You may call the rectory and let us know that you would like envelopes. An envelope number will be assigned to you on our computer and the box will be put in the back sacristy for you to pick up at your earliest convenience. Thank you for your continued support.

FREE TAX HELP FOR SENIORS: The AARP Foundation, in cooperation with the IRS, will provide free and confidential tax assistance for low and middle income taxpayers age 60 and older. Membership by AARP is NOT required. This will be done at St. Mark's Family Center every Tuesday and Thursday, through April, by appointment. Call 862-2796 between the hours of 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays or Fridays to set up your appointment.

C.Y.O. BASKETBALL: St. Mark's sponsors two boys' basketball teams in the C.Y.O. League. Why not support them by attending one of their games? This Sunday our 5-6 graders play St. John Vianney at Winooski H.S. at 2 pm. and the 7-8 graders play St. Joseph's at Rice H.S. at 5 p.m.

The Mass Explained: Liturgy of the Word Continued

After a moment of silence, we all rise at the intonation of the Gospel Acclamation. The Alleluia is sung except during Lent when it is replaced with other subdued verses of praise as we recall our human condition and our need for salvation. The word 'Alleluia' means 'praise the Lord.' We join in the exultant singing as our way of greeting the Lord who is present in a special way in the Gospels.
During the Acclamation the priest bows before the altar and inaudibly prays, “Almighty God, cleanse my heart and my lips that I may worthily proclaim your Gospel.” At the ambo, the priest or deacon announces the Gospel and the faithful respond, “Glory to you, O Lord.” The Gospel is the high point of the Liturgy of the Word. Collectively, the evangelists tell us about Jesus' earthly ministry and His death. This is followed by signing ourselves with three crosses on our forehead, our lips, and our heart. Silently, these actions embody the prayer, “May the word of God be on my mind, in my words, and in my heart” as we try to live out the Good News we are about to hear. 'Gospel' means 'Good News!'
There are three cycles of Sunday readings with particular Gospels assigned to each: Year A is St. Matthew; B is St. Mark; C is St. Luke. St. John's Gospel is proclaimed during the 50 days of the Easter season. At the conclusion of the Gospel, the priest or deacon will acclaim, “The Gospel of the Lord” which begs our reverence, so we respond, “Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ!” The Gospel is kissed as a sign of reverence and concludes with another inaudible prayer, “Through the words of the Gospel, may our sins be washed away.”
The homily is to be an explanation (its meaning in Greek) and an application of what we have just heard by bringing it into the present moment. Homilies are not assembly instructions, but are intended to make our “hearts burn” as Jesus did for the disciples on the road to Emmaus. It is an awesome (and difficult) task. We believe that God assists the homilist, but he is also marked with human limitations. Yet, it is not just the task of the homilist to make your “hearts burn” ... its your job as well! It's easy to fan a red-hot coal into flame in ten minutes. It's impossible to start a fire with cold fuel in that short time. The homilies may not always be eloquent, but if your heart is not cold, you will get something from every homily.
Having heard the word of God and its application, we give our response by professing our Faith. We pray the Nicaean-Constantinopolitan Creed at Mass- composed at two respective councils in the years 325 and 381 as a brief formula for those to be baptized. We use it today as a way of purifying ourselves of any faulty beliefs. We begin by saying, “We believe ...” confident in the God of love who gathers us together.
Finally we have the general intercessions, where we pray for our needs and the needs of our neighbors. As a rule, the Church gives us a sequence to model our intentions: 1) For the Church; 2) For public authorities and the salvation of the world; 3) For those oppressed by any need; 4) For the local community. The priest concludes them by asking God to accept our petitions through Jesus Christ, our Lord.
- Fr. Dan
